Sri Lanka to offer tariff to buy solar energy in the night!
Sri Lanka is preparing a tariff for state-run Ceylon Electricity Board for solar power with battery, where electricity will be supplied during the night peak, as part of efforts to boost renewables, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said.
“It is likely to be a promotional tariff,” Minister Jayakody told parliament. “We would like investors to come for that. We will make it profitable for them.
“They can charge the battery during the day and supply to our grid during the night.”A committee has been appointed to go into the matter.“We will finalize it, submit for cabinet approval and bring it out.”
Sri Lanka is boosting renewable energy as part of efforts to produce 70 percent of energy from renewables.Strong growth in rooftop solar power over the last two years has undermined system stability during weekends and CEB is planning battery energy systems as well as pump storage plants.
Sri Lanka has a cascading power failure in 2025 on a Sunday when large plants with inertia were providing a small share of power with high solar power.
In addition, new renewables would also be required to come with ramping reducing short term volatility in supply. In some countries net metering is now being terminated in favour of ‘self-produced self-consumed power’ and caps on sales to the grid.
The so-called ‘levelized cost’ of renewable energy does not reflect the true cost of energy to the utility or consumers, as large investments have to be made in the grid to accommodate variable solar and wind and also have stand by thermal plants to use during low seasons.Germany’s new government, formed by Friedrich Mertz, is planning to cut grid fees after industries started to close or shift to other countries over high electricity tariffs.
In Germany renewable power problems were compounded by shutdowns of coal and also nuclear under pressure from Greens by earlier administrations unlike countries like France.
